Dustin van der Haar is an Associate Professor in the Academy of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Johannesburg. His primary field of interest is in applied artificial intelligence for perceiving human beings. In other words, Dustin focuses on developing algorithms that solve text, signal and vision data that contains structural or behavioural aspects of humans to solve problems that matter. He is also the current co-chair for the South African Young Academy of Scientists (SAYAS) that work with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) to provide a voice to emerging scientists and empower them to make a difference in South Africa. Dustin is the recipient of multiple awards and publications nationally and internationally in the area of pattern recognition, which encompasses the fields of biometrics, computer vision, and medical image analysis.
